We don't take ourselves very seriously around here, but one thing that we do take seriously is God's word. Our highest goal is to become more like Jesus, and we know that doesn’t come simply from knowing God's word, but that it's found in truly living it out.
But we also recognize that this amazing book, called the Bible, contains complexity, so we've broken down how we approach our beliefs into two basic categories:
PRIMARY & SECONDARY BELIEFS
“In Essentials Unity, In Non-Essentials Liberty, In All Things Charity.” Rupertus Meldenius
WE ARE UNIFIED IN OUR PRIMARY BELIEFS:
WE ATTEMPT TO ALIGN OUR LIVES AND OUR CHURCH WITH THESE TRIED AND TRUE SUMMARY STATEMENTS OF THE FOUNDATIONAL BELIEFS FOUND IN SCRIPTURE:
THE NICENE CREED
I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible.
And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all worlds; God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God; begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made.
Who, for us men for our salvation, came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary, and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate; He suffered and was buried; and the third day He rose again, according to the Scriptures; and ascended into heaven, and sits on the right hand of the Father; and He shall come again, with glory, to judge the quick and the dead; whose kingdom shall have no end.
And I believe in the Holy Ghost, the Lord and Giver of Life; who proceeds from the Father [and the Son]; who with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and glorified; who spoke by the prophets.
And I believe one holy catholic* and apostolic Church. I acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins; and I look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.
*this use of catholic means universal
THE APOSTLES CREED
I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
Maker of heaven and earth.
And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died and was buried.
He descended into hell.
On the third day He rose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven
and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.
From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen
WE VARY IN OUR SECONDARY BELIEFS:
We value intellectual honesty here, which means that there will naturally be some disagreement in our church over some secondary issues
(i.e. beliefs that are not explicitly outlined as a primary belief, such as Political Views, Gender roles, Use of Spiritual Gifts in the Church, Eschatology, Consumption of Alcohol/Tobacco, Speaking in Tongues, Sexual Orientation/Identity, Predestination, Election, etc) .
However, when it comes to secondary beliefs, we approach these as a matter of thoughtful & prayerful Biblical interpretation, not as a matter of challenging the Bible’s authority, or just ignoring the parts that we don’t like.
WE ARE GRACE FILLED IN ALL OUR RESPONSES
We believe the church should be a family and not a corporation which means that there will inevitably be disagreements within the family.
Knowing this is the case, we aim to practice grace and civil discourse with one another, in order to better understand each other's Biblical perspective and how God is working in different ways throughout our church family.
